Charsadda district is a important political hub of  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa  that contains the town of Charsadda. The town was part of the Peshawar ex-metropolitan region. Pashtuns make up majority of the population of the district.

Charsadda is located in the west of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is bounded by Malakand District on the north. Mardan district on the east, Nowshera and Peshawar districts on the south and the Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas on the west. The district covers am area of 996 square kilometres.

With a history that dates back to the ancient Gandhara civilisation, Charsadda is known for being the home district to many of the well-known politicians of NWFP. However, its most famous son has been Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, known among his disciples as Bachha Khan. The leading exponent of non-violence in this part of what was then undivided India, Khan was known as the Frontier Gandhi. The district is divided into three tehsils: Charsadda, Tangi and Shabqadar. It is also the hometown of former interior minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao.
